In AD71 an army of 5,000 Romans marched from Lincoln to York and invaded, claiming it for themselves. Later in 866, the Vikings led by Halfdan and Ivar the Boneless attacked York for the first time.

Walk along ‘The Shambles’, a medieval cobbled shopping street or visit the Jorvik centre to learn about the Viking history of York.
